How a Dog Changed Everything
The Photo
Atsuko Sato posts photos of her rescued Shiba Inu, Kabosu, on her blog in Sakura, Japan. She doesn't know she's just created the face of a movement.
The Fork
Dec 6. Billy Markus forks Luckycoin (itself a fork of Litecoin → Bitcoin) in about 3 hours. Scrypt PoW, 1-minute blocks, Ð10,000 block reward, unlimited supply. Jackson Palmer had already bought dogecoin.com on a whim and added Comic Sans.
The Hack
Dec 25. Dogewallet hacked — millions of DOGE stolen, redirected to a single wallet. The community launched “SaveDogemas” and donated enough to cover every stolen coin within a month.
The Golden Age
Jan: Trading volume briefly surpasses ALL other cryptocurrencies combined. The community raises Ð26.5M ($30K) for the Jamaican bobsled team. Then $55K for Josh Wise's NASCAR car #98. Then clean water wells in Kenya via Doge4Water.
The Reward Fix
March. Block reward changed from randomized to static Ð10,000. The randomized reward was a Luckycoin artifact — miners could get anywhere from 0 to 1M DOGE per block. Markus patched it for stability.
The Exits
Jackson Palmer leaves crypto entirely, later calling it “an inherently right-wing, hyper-capitalistic technology.” Billy Markus sells all his DOGE and buys a Honda Civic. Both co-founders gone. The community keeps running.
$85 Billion
Elon tweets. SNL happens. DOGE goes from $0.007 to $0.73. Market cap: $85B — more than Ford Motor Company. Coinbase lists it. A rescue dog from a puppy mill becomes the 7th largest cryptocurrency on Earth.
Kabosu Rests
May 24th. She was 18 years old. Atsuko Sato held a memorial at Furusato Square in Sakura. Hundreds attended. The original doge — adopted from a puppy mill, photographed on a couch, worth $85 billion to strangers — rests.
$DOGELORE
Everyone forgot why we're here. It wasn't for PvP or rugging strangers. It was for fun and believing in something stupid together.
